Why we're here

The Network of Young Professionals was created to help address an issue commonly known as "brain drain."

For years, many companies in the Lehigh Valley have found it difficult to recruit and retain young professionals. The idea behind the NET was to foster a sense of community among this group... to help them get out and meet other young people, to provide them with professional development and showcase what the Valley has to offer. If you could improve young professionals' quality of life, then they would be less likely to consider leaving.

That's where the Ben Franklin Technology Partners stepped in. This state-funded economic development group helped harness the energy of some of the region's young professionals to start a group. The first event was held on January 24, 2001. Over 80 people attended. Since then, membership and interest have steadily increased to over 1,500 members.

Today, NET frequently fields complaints that Lehigh Valley companies are having difficulties recruiting young hires. Perhaps this is due to the misconception that if there is a job available, they will come.

Contrary to popular belief, young professionals do not relocate solely on quality job availability. Two thirds of Americans ages 25 through 34 say they’re deciding first where they want to put down roots, and then looking for a job in that place, according to a report by CEOs for Cities, a national network of urban leaders.
